Sprinting Theory: How to Have Self-Discipline on Steroids

There ain’t no such thing as willpower. Explaining away wins and losses by some magical force is only useful if you don’t understand anything about your own psychology. Having concrete theories about why your self-discipline can fail you is far more useful. I’m going to explore one of those ideas for putting your self-discipline on steroids. Using this concept has been incredibly useful in breaking through my own laziness. This simple idea I’m going to refer to as sprinting theory. 100-Meter Dash or Marathon? Running is all about pacing. If you go too fast early in the race, you’ll burn out all your energy far before the finish line. Completing a marathon is quite different than bursting through the 100-meter dash. If you get the pacing wrong you’ll either finish way behind or stop halfway. Pacing a sprint is straightforward because of one thing:  you know the length of the race . You know before the starting pistol fires whether you’ll finish a brief lap around the track...

Push your limits

You train fleas by putting them in a jar with a top on it. Fleas jump, so they will jump up and hit the top over and over again. As you watch them jump and hit the top, you will notice something interesting. The fleas continue to jump, but they are no longer jumping high enough to hit the top. Then, and it's a matter of record, you can take the top off and though the fleas continue to jump, they won't jump out of the jar. I repeat, they won't jump out because they can't. The reason is simple. They have conditioned themselves to jump just so high. Once they have conditioned themselves to jump just so high, that's all they can do. Many times, people do the same thing. They restrict themselves and never reach their potential. Just like the fleas, they fail to jump higher, thinking they are doing all they can do.

Time Management

Imagine there is a bank, which credits your account each morning with Rs 86,400, carries over no balance from day to day, allows you to keep no cash balance, and every evening cancels whatever part of the amount you had failed to use during the day. What would you do? Draw out every pence, of course! Well, everyone has such a bank. Its name is Time. Every morning, it credits you with 86,400 seconds. Every night it writes off, as lost, whatever of this you have failed to invest to good purpose. It carries over no balance. It allows no overdraft. Each day it opens a new account for you. Each night it burns the records of the day. If you fail to use the day's deposits, the loss is yours. There is no going back. There is no drawing against the "tomorrow." Therefore, there is never not enough time or too much time. Time management is decided by us alone and nobody else. It is never the case of us not having enough time to do things, but the case of whether we want to do it...

Keep your dreams to yourself

Lots of people become enthusiastic about their new goals after they set them and as a result they feel like telling others about them. While there can be some benefits of discussing your goals with others such as seeing the goals from a different point of view or getting useful advice still there are bad consequences that could happen as a result of sharing your goals with those people. Even if you were so motivated your mind can get programmed by these beliefs and you might find yourself demotivated just because you discussed your goals with some of your friends. Don't underestimate the effect of subconscious mind programming especially if the programming was coming from a trusted source. If one of the people you believe it tried to put you down then you might lose motivation as a result! Keep Your Dreams To Yourself Lots of people become enthusiastic about their new goals after they set them and as a result they feel like telling others about them. While there can be some ben...

Lack of Motivation and Enthusiasm

A friend of mine asked me how not to worry about the cat, which had some mild symptoms of illness, but nothing that looked severe enough to take the cat to the veterinarian. She also thought the symptoms were so subtle that they might not be easy to describe to the vet, but still she worried. I finally said to her, "You must do something." "That's just the problem, there's nothing to do," she said. "Take some kind of action," I said. "Call the vet and talk to him." "That doesn't make sense because the vet wouldn't know anything from what I told him, and he'd probably ask me to take her in to see him, and I know it's not that serious," she said. "Yes, I understand," I said, "But you should take the action for you, not for the car or the vet. By not doing anything you're keeping yourself trapped in worrying." "Okay," she said. "I see what you mean." When she called ...

6 Ways to Make Getting Up Early Work for You

by STEPHANIE VOZZA To accomplish a big goal, such as launching a new business, writing a novel or starting an exercise regime, productivity experts will often suggest getting up early. You can get a lot done in a quiet house with no distractions or interruptions. While this is sound advice, it’s easier said than done. “You might think getting up earlier is just a matter of discipline, but it actually takes much more than that,” says Julie Morgenstern, time management expert and author of  Never Check Email in the Morning (Touchstone; 2005). “The truth is, your entire ecosystem has been built around sleeping later.” When you try to change your morning routine, several obstacles will stand in your way. It’s possible to overcome them, however; the key is to start the night before. Morgenstern offers six strategies to make getting up early work for you: 1. Change your mindset.  Many people fight going to sleep because they want to get m...

How to Push Past the “I Suck” Moments

Nobody wants to be bad at something. Nobody wants to take a step backwards. Nobody wants to move from a comfort zone where you already kick-ass to one where you feel out of place. But sometimes it needs to be done. Here’s just a few ideas I’ve found helpful for pushing past “I Suck” until you can eventually say “I’m Great!” Cut Denial  – The hardest step is admitting you have a problem. Admitting that an area of your life isn’t as great as you want it to be. Or facing the truth that your current direction, while comfortable, isn’t taking you anywhere . Face Your Pain  – Don’t fight it. If you feel crappy, search through it. Don’t dilute your depressed or uncomfortable feelings about a bad area of your life. Write out your thoughts and feeling. Admit “I Suck” liberally. It will substitute a chronic pain for an acute one. But facing those thoughts is the only way through them. Start at the Bottom  – Push through your pride and start back at the bottom. If qu...

Motivation and How to Get Motivated

by REMEZ SASSON How many times have you started enthusiastically a weight loss program, began a bodybuilding or aerobics training program, or started learning a foreign language, only to stop after a short while? Often, there is lack of motivation, or only a short-lived one. Motivation has become a popular term nowadays. There are motivational coaches and speakers, and motivational books and articles. What is it actually, and why do you need it? Motivation is a driving force . In order to accomplish anything, you need a driving force, otherwise nothing will happen. A wish is not strong enough to make you take action. A wish is a weak desire. Only a strong desire can drive you forward, to act and accomplish aims and goals. In order to get motivated, you need to know exactly what it is that you want, to possess a strong desire, and to be willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish your goal. It easier to display motivation in connection with short-term goals. When it comes...
